چکیده

We study the impact and subsequent retraction dynamics of liquid droplets upon highspeed impact on hydrophobic surfaces. Performing extensive experiments, we show that the drop retraction rate is a material constant and does not depend on the impact velocity. We show that when increasing the Ohnesorge number, Oh = η/ √ ρRIγ, the retraction, i.e. dewetting, dynamics crosses over from a capillaro-inertial regime to a capillaro-viscous regime. We rationalize the experimental observations by a simple but robust semi-quantitative model for the solid-liquid contact line dynamics inspired by the standard theories for thin film dewetting.

Influence of substrate elasticity on droplet impact dynamics.

Droplet impact dynamics is vital to the understanding of several phase-change and heat-transfer phenomena. This work examines the role of substrate elasticity on the spreading and retraction behavior of water droplets impacting flat and textured superhydrophobic substrates. Experiments reveal that droplet retraction on flat surfaces decreases with decreasing substrate elasticity. This trend is ...

Symmetry breaking in drop bouncing on curved surfaces.

The impact of liquid drops on solid surfaces is ubiquitous in nature, and of practical importance in many industrial processes. A drop hitting a flat surface retains a circular symmetry throughout the impact process. Here we show that a drop impinging on Echevaria leaves exhibits asymmetric bouncing dynamics with distinct spreading and retraction along two perpendicular directions. This is a di...

An Investigation of the Fluid Dynamics Aspects of Thin Liquid Film Protection Schemes for Inertial Fusion Energy

Experimental and numerical studies of the fluid dynamics of thin liquid film wall protection systems have been conducted in support of the ARIES-IFE study. Both the porous “wetted wall” concept, involving low-speed injection through a porous wall normal to the surface, and the “forced film” concept, involving high-speed injection through slots tangential to the surface, have been examined. Thes...

Drops can bounce from perfectly hydrophilic surfaces

Drops are well known to rebound from superhydrophobic surfaces and from liquid surfaces. Here, we show that drops can also rebound from a superhydrophilic solid surface such as an atomically smooth mica sheet. However, the coefficient of restitution CR associated with this process is significantly lower than that associated with rebound from superhydrophobic surfaces. A direct imaging method al...

Microfluidic approach for rapid multicomponent interfacial tensiometry.

We report a microfluidic instrument to rapidly measure the interfacial tension of multi-component immiscible liquids. The measurement principle rests upon the deformation and retraction dynamics of drops under extensional flow and was implemented for the first time in microfluidics (S. D. Hudson et al., Appl. Phys. Lett., 2005, 87, 081905 (ref. )). Here we describe in detail the instrument desi...
